The story of The Ascent Within

I began this piece with the world hidden inside it: clear crystal holding golden stairways, miniature travellers and a turquoise portal. Everything that followed—the shell, the stones and the base—grew around that sense of discovery. I wanted to express a spiritual journey, grounded in earthly experience but reaching towards something expansive and mysterious.

The journey begins at the base. A delicate gold spiral unfolds across deep lapis, gathering around a small turquoise centre. From there, curved gold supports rise into the flowing ribbons of the shell, carrying the eye upwards.

Lapis lazuli gives this imagined universe its midnight blue. Its long association with royalty and sacred objects brings a sense of reverence; in this artwork, I also use it to suggest wisdom and the depth of the unknown. Bloodstone represents the courage to begin: its dark green and red markings hold the journey close to the earth. Ruby brings the pulse of life. Its historical association with vitality becomes, here, the energy and conviction needed to move forward.

The seven rare gemstones become encounters along that ascent. Their meanings within this piece are my own.

Black opal represents mystery—the possibility of finding unexpected colour within darkness. Alexandrite stands for transformation: its changing appearance becomes a reminder that understanding can shift as we move through life. Grandidierite offers a moment of balance, its blue-green suggesting the quiet between one stage and the next.

Paraíba tourmaline carries the turquoise thread through the design. For me, it represents awakening, connecting the outer shell to the luminous portal within. Benitoite becomes a point of guidance in the surrounding blue. Sphene represents sudden insight through its flashes of colour, while pale jeremejevite brings a moment of stillness near the summit: illumination expressed with restraint.

I wanted the imagined craftsmanship to reward close attention. Simulated 22-karat gold moves between satin surfaces and polished edges, embracing fitted inlays and carefully defined settings. Fine traces of gold dust, silver particles and glass-like glints follow selected curves, allowing the stones and sculptural forms room to breathe.

When the egg opens, the movement of the shell becomes a journey inside crystal. Travellers climb towards the portal, surrounded by midnight blue and a few quiet stars. The opening suggests further space beyond it—a world that continues past the limits of our view.

For me, this is where the piece finds its meaning: an outward ascent leading towards an inward discovery.

The summit · light gathered into stillness

I wanted the rising gold to become quieter as it approached the crown. The blue and turquoise accents hold the eye along the curve, while the pale summit stone suggests a moment of illumination. Lapis gives these encounters a deep field of colour. The polished ribbon edges and small settings make the ascent feel carefully composed, with enough space for each jewel to retain its presence.

The ribbons · a turning point in the journey

Here, the gold changes direction around a violet-green jewel intended to evoke alexandrite. I use that encounter to express transformation: a turn in the path, and a change in how the world is understood. Softer gold surfaces meet brighter bevels, while dark blue remains visible between the curves. I wanted the setting to belong to the movement of the shell, as though the journey had shaped its place.

The earthly beginning · bloodstone, opal and life

I bring the darkest materials towards the lower shell. Bloodstone’s green and red markings suggest courage rooted in earthly experience; the black opal holds unexpected blue-green light within darkness. A ruby-coloured accent introduces the pulse of life, while the warm yellow jewel recalls sphene’s flashes. The gold wraps around these contrasting surfaces, gathering them into the beginning of one ascent.

The foundation · a universe beginning to unfold

I wanted the base to carry the same story as the shell and the hidden crystal world. A fine gold spiral unfolds across lapis towards a small turquoise centre, anticipating the portal inside. Curved supports lift the egg above that origin, leaving open space beneath it. The beaded rim and dark blue frontal jewel give the foundation its own detail, while the reflected gold connects the whole piece to the surface below.

The world beyond the shell

The portal · a threshold into the unknown

The turquoise opening is the emotional centre of the interior. Three small travellers stand before its gold arch, giving the imagined world a human scale. I wanted their different silhouettes to suggest different responses to discovery: anticipation, hesitation and the decision to enter. The clear facets hold the surrounding golden architecture, while the blue light invites the eye towards a space that remains partly unseen.

The stairway · discovery through movement

Inside the crystal, the shell’s abstract ascent becomes a path that can be followed. The golden stairs curve through successive levels, carrying a lone traveller towards the portal. I wanted the journey to feel gradual, with turns and pauses along the way. Rails, arches and receding forms hint at a larger inner world; the crystal’s facets divide and reflect its light, making discovery something that unfolds through looking.

The cradle · a precious world carefully held

I place the crystal universe in a low cradle of warm gold leaves. The central Paraíba-inspired jewel repeats the portal’s turquoise, joining the setting to the world it supports. Dark opal-like colour and smaller violet, blue-green and yellow accents continue the gemstone journey around it. I wanted the leaf forms, beaded rim and varied reflections to give the miniature world a sense of care, as though its setting had been made specifically to shelter it.

The midnight canopy · space for wonder — detail of The Ascent Within

The midnight canopy · space for wonder

Above the crystal, I leave a field of deep midnight blue with only a few gold stars and jewel-like points of light. That quieter space lets the illuminated world breathe. The gold rim traces the sheltering curve of the egg, turning the interior into a small celestial chamber. For me, this surrounding darkness is part of the spiritual meaning: the journey reveals something precious while leaving room for everything still unknown.
