JABBI DELAHAYE CURATED ART FILMS · COLLECTION THREE

Reimagining
the Masters

Contemporary artists transforming classical painting, identity, history and myth

THE COLLECTION

Engaging with Renaissance and Old Master art does not require copying it. Historical visual languages can become foundations for new images, technologies and cultural narratives.

These ten films connect the historical knowledge in the first two collections directly to contemporary practice. The artists study, borrow from, challenge and transform traditions of mastery, classical portraiture, mythology and the museum canon.

Together they explore Black portraiture, cultural memory, diasporic identity, textiles, photographic transfer, collage and the rebalancing of art history—questions central to Jabbi Delahaye’s evolving practice.

What did the Old Masters understand about composition, colour, space and visual authority—and how can a contemporary Black artist acquire that knowledge without reproducing the exclusions of the historical canon?

Marshall represents Black figures with the force, ambition and complexity traditionally reserved for European subjects. He studies historical systems and uses them to project a different ideal into the museum.

CONNECTION TO JABBI DELAHAYE’S PRACTICE

Marshall’s central argument speaks directly to Jabbi’s practice: mastery involves understanding what earlier artists knew, then synthesising that knowledge into something culturally and personally distinctive.

Harmonia Rosales reimagines familiar Renaissance compositions through Yoruba mythology and Black female figures.

Women and people of African descent occupy roles associated with divinity, beauty, creation and authority. Greek and Roman sources are interwoven with Yoruba cosmology.

CONNECTION TO JABBI DELAHAYE’S PRACTICE

Rosales provides a close contemporary parallel to Jabbi’s Renaissance-inspired practice: pose, symbolism and technical refinement remain, while the cultural centre is decisively transformed.

03 · CURATED FILM

Can Art Amend History?

Publisher
TED
Featured artist
Titus Kaphar
Category
Reframing Art History
Format
Illustrated artist talk and live painting demonstration
Running time
Approximately 12 minutes 42 seconds
Watch the original talk on TED (opens in a new tab)

Titus Kaphar demonstrates how changing the visual hierarchy of a historical painting can reveal people and narratives that were previously overlooked.

By obscuring dominant figures, Kaphar makes a marginalised Black figure visible. Historical art, he proposes, can be amended and reframed—not erased.

CONNECTION TO JABBI DELAHAYE’S PRACTICE

Kaphar offers a precise model for treating historical imagery as active material that can be questioned, reorganised and made to speak differently in the present.

04 · CURATED FILM

Wiley replaces the aristocrats and rulers of European portraiture with contemporary Black subjects in present-day clothing and elaborate pattern.

Participants select historical references and decide how they wish to be represented, introducing agency into a tradition historically controlled by wealthy patrons.

Contextual note: Serious allegations have been made against Wiley since 2024. He denies them and has not been charged. This film is included as an examination of artistic practice, not an endorsement of the artist personally.

CONNECTION TO JABBI DELAHAYE’S PRACTICE

The work offers valuable lessons about pose, scale, ornament and the way portraiture constructs authority.

Barkley L. Hendricks brought European portraiture into conversation with the confidence, fashion and individuality of contemporary Black life.

His subjects control attention through posture, clothing, scale and gaze. The Frick setting places that authority directly among Old Masters he admired.

CONNECTION TO JABBI DELAHAYE’S PRACTICE

Hendricks demonstrates how historical conventions can be understood deeply, then redirected towards subjects the canon failed to centre.

06 · CURATED FILM

Bisa Butler creates monumental portraits from intricately cut, layered and stitched textiles, using historical photographs to restore individuality and presence.

Butler approaches fabric as a painter approaches pigment. Pattern, colour, texture and cultural association model faces, clothing and character.

CONNECTION TO JABBI DELAHAYE’S PRACTICE

Butler’s practice is especially relevant to Jabbi’s material experimentation: formal portraiture retains its ambition while moving beyond conventional paint and canvas.

Akunyili Crosby combines painting, drawing, photographic transfer and collage in interiors shaped by her Nigerian upbringing and American life.

Family photographs, magazines, album covers, plants and Igbo patterns form a material archive in which several places, generations and identities coexist.

CONNECTION TO JABBI DELAHAYE’S PRACTICE

Her question—how to enter an established tradition and use it to discuss what matters personally—is central to Jabbi’s combination of hand, digital and AI-assisted processes.

Shonibare reconstructs European historical scenes with sculptural figures dressed in brightly patterned wax fabrics, questioning empire, class and cultural ownership.

The fabrics carry complex international histories before narrative is added, showing that material can communicate history rather than function as surface decoration alone.

CONNECTION TO JABBI DELAHAYE’S PRACTICE

Shonibare provides a framework for thinking about how Jabbi’s gold, pigments, gemstones, papers and digital processes can operate as conceptual elements as well as visual effects.

09 · CURATED FILM

Firelei Báez overlays painting, pattern and hybrid mythological figures onto maps and documents associated with colonial power.

Caribbean history, the African diaspora, Yoruba traditions and speculative fiction turn historical trauma into a starting point for imagining survival and alternative futures.

CONNECTION TO JABBI DELAHAYE’S PRACTICE

Báez connects with Jabbi’s historical imagery, African cultural references and futuristic visual language, transforming the archive without allowing it to limit the new work.

10 · CURATED FILM

Wangechi Mutu creates hybrid female figures from painting, collage, fashion, medicine, botany, anthropology and mass media.

Her figures can appear beautiful, unsettling, mechanical, organic and mythological at once. Incompatible sources become a coherent and unmistakably personal world.

CONNECTION TO JABBI DELAHAYE’S PRACTICE

Mutu’s approach is highly relevant to AI-assisted and digitally composited art: a model for synthesising diverse sources without losing conceptual coherence.

THE COLLECTION’S PROGRESSION

From historical knowledge to a new visual language.

Collection One: how Renaissance paintings were constructed.

Collection Two: whose identities and values they represented.

Collection Three: how contemporary artists transform that inheritance.

The destination is not imitation, but synthesis.

CURATORIAL APPROACH

Why these films belong together

Each film demonstrates a distinct strategy: recentering Black figures, reframing hierarchy, transforming materials, layering personal archives or building new mythologies.

No film repeats Collections One or Two. Together, the three collections create a clear journey from historical foundations to culturally specific contemporary invention.
