A serene woman with closed eyes, wearing an elaborate gold headdress, long blue and green gemstone strands and a broad jewelled collar against black

IN THE ARTIST’S WORDS

I wanted to capture a quiet kind of strength. Her eyes are closed, her expression settled, yet she holds your attention. That sense of serenity became the centre of the portrait, with every surrounding detail contributing to her presence.

The Renaissance influence comes through in the treatment of light, the richness of colour and the attention given to the face and its adornment. Against the deep black background, light reveals the contours of her skin, catches the goldwork and draws you into the stones.

Within this portrait, the lapis-inspired blues speak to reflection and inner depth, while the jade-like greens suggest renewal, balance and harmony. The gold carries a sense of dignity and enduring strength, a warmth that echoes the richness of her inner world.

The jewellery became a study in imagined craftsmanship: how each rounded stone sits within its setting, the fine gold borders, the weight of the hanging beads and the relationship between the headdress and collar. I wanted those details to feel convincing when you move closer.

Working towards greater photorealism meant paying attention to small differences in surface, reflection and colour. Each material needed its own character—the warmth of skin, the polished depth of stone, the changing light across gold.

For me, the majesty of this portrait rests in her stillness. I hope the intricate jewellery draws you closer, and that her quiet strength stays with you.
